La capital provincial de Huaraz, al norte del Perú, atrae a
quienes disfrutan de actividades al aire libre y a quienes
aprecian sus maravillosos paisajes y belleza natural. Es
el punto de acceso al Parque Nacional Huascarán, una
Reserva de Biosfera y Patrimonio de la Humanidad de
la UNESCO, con 30 cumbres de más de 5000 metros,
docenas de lagos y crujientes glaciares. Hacia el sureste
de Huaraz está el complejo arqueológico Chavín de
Huantar con templos, túneles, edi? cios de piedra y plazas.
Fue el centro ceremonial de la antigua cultura Chavín, que
in? uenció durante siglos a grandes regiones del Perú.
Descubierta en 1843, Kuélap es una enorme e impresionante fortaleza de piedra situada en la cima de una
montaña, entre la bruma y los árboles del bosque nubloso. Fue construida por la cultura guerrera de los
Chachapoyas, quienes defendieron su territorio de los Incas hasta que ? nalmente sucumbieron ante su expansión
hacia el norte en el Siglo XIV, unas pocas décadas antes de la llegada de los españoles liderados por Francisco
Pizarro. Kuélap es solamente una de numerosas ruinas que están siendo descubiertas en esta remota región.
