El indefatigable explorador alemán Alexander von Humbolt (1769-1859) puso a
América del Sur en los salones y casas europeas del Siglo XIX. Fue la figura más grande
de las ciencias naturales en su época. De hecho, en ese tiempo en Europa, solamente
Napoleón fue más famoso.
Entre 1799 y 1804, Humboldt viajó a América Latina, explorándola y describiéndola
desde un punto de vista científico. La descripción de su viaje fue escrita y publicada en
una enorme cantidad de volúmenes a lo largo de 21 años. Él fue uno de los primeros
científicos que propuso la teoría de que Sudamérica y África estaban una vez unidas, y
realizó docenas de descubrimientos y contribuciones para la ciencia.
Humboldt, y su acompañante Aimeé Bonpland, comenzaron su odisea en América
Latina en Cumaná, Venezuela, y siguieron río arriba por el Orinoco, un viaje que duró
cuatro meses y cubrió una distancia de 2.776 kilómetros, en un área inmensa, salvaje y
deshabitada. Luego de una estancia en Cuba, regresaron al continente por Cartagena y
asciendieron por el Río Magdalena hacia el sur, para eventualmente llegar a Quito en
1802. Luego los dos viajaron juntos por Perú, México y los Estados Unidos. Charles
Darwin lo describió como El científico viajero más grande que ha existido.
