La capital del Ecuador es una ciudad moderna, pero con una larga y fascinante historia. Al tiempo de la conquista
española de los Andes, Quito fue la segunda ciudad en importancia del Imperio de los Incas, después de Cusco.
La ciudad se enorgullece de su herencia cultural y su encantador Centro Histórico, el primero en ser designado
Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, hoy bellamente restaurado. Los visitantes adoran este extenso
barrio con sus iglesias, museos, almacenes de curiosidades y escondidos patios, así como también los excelentes
hoteles y restaurantes, los parques y la cultura de sus zonas más modernas.
A poca distancia hacia el norte de Quito, la Línea Equinoccial marca la cintura del planeta. En el Siglo 18 la Misión
Geodésica Francesa visitó Ecuador para establecer la línea equinoccial. Modernos sistemas han determinado que la
línea no está precisamente en la latitud 0°, sino un tanto al sur, pero aún así su medición es sorprendentemente precisa;
sin embargo, restos arqueológicos de los antiguos habitantes sí muestran el lugar preciso! Dentro del monumento que
marca la Mitad del Mundo hay un Museo Etnográ? co y en los alrededores almacenes de artesanías, restaurantes, una
exhibición del trabajo de la misión francesa y más. Hay que fotogra? arse con un pie en cada hemisferio!
